Percentages of an Amount

To find a percentage of an amount, we can find 1% by dividing by 100, 10% by dividing by 10 and 50% by dividing by 2, then combine these to find our percentage.

Find the percentage of an amount

Let's find $30\mathrm{\%}$ of 50.

First find $10\mathrm{\%}$ by dividing by 10.

$$10\mathrm{\%}\text{ of }50=50÷10=5$$


Find 30% by multiplying the 10% by 3.

$$10\mathrm{\%}\text{ of }50=5$$

$$30\mathrm{\%}\text{ of }50=5\times 3=30$$
